Day 131 2 Samuel 10; 1 Chronicles 19; Psalm 20
Welcome to Day 131. David hears that the king of the Ammonites has died, so he sends messengers to comfort the king's son, Hanun. It’s a move made with a good heart—David had a solid relationship with the father, and he wants to honor that by showing kindness to the son.
Take Note: We are reading 2 Samuel 10 and 1 Chronicles 19 together. Both accounts show how a simple act of sympathy turned into a major war. We also include Psalm 20, which is the "battle cry" prayer that David and the people likely prayed before heading out to face these massive armies.
2 Samuel 10 & 1 Chronicles 19
Hanun’s advisors "poison the well" by telling him David is actually sending spies. Instead of accepting the comfort, Hanun humiliates David's ambassadors. He shaves off half their beards and cuts their clothes in half! These acts were meant to shame and degrade them.
David’s response is very telling.
He doesn't ignore the insult, but he protects his men first. He tells them to stay in Jericho until their beards grow back so they can recover their dignity. Meanwhile, the Ammonites panic. They realize they’ve started a fight they can’t finish, so they hire thousands of Syrian mercenaries to help them.
The Strategy: Joab and his brother Abishai lead the army. Joab gives a famous pep talk: "Be of good courage... and may the Lord do what seems good to him." They win a massive victory because they fought for their people and trusted God's plan.
Psalm 20
This psalm is the perfect soundtrack for today’s reading. It is a prayer for the king on the eve of battle.
While the Ammonites and Syrians were putting their faith in the "chariots and horses" they just hired, Israel had a different strategy.
The Difference: David says, "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."
Jesus Connection: David was a king leading his people to victory, but this psalm also points to the "Future King" from David's line (Jesus). Jesus is the King who went into the ultimate battle for us, and God answered Him by raising Him from the dead.
The Heartbeat: Not everyone will receive your kindness. Sometimes your "comfort" will be misinterpreted as a "threat." David’s response shows us how to handle it: protect the dignity of those around you, don't rush into a bitter revenge, and remember that victory doesn't come from your resources—it comes from God’s name.
Heart-Check: Has your kindness ever been thrown back in your face? Did you react in anger, or did you leave the outcome to God? What are your "chariots and horses"—the things you catch yourself trusting in instead of God? How can you "protect the dignity" of someone else who has been shamed or hurt today?
