Day 258 Bible Study Daniel 7-9

Welcome to Day 258. Today the book of Daniel shifts from stories to visions — and these visions have been debated by scholars, theologians, and serious Bible students for centuries. We are going to walk through what the text says, what the major interpretive frameworks propose, and land where Jesus Himself landed: faithful, watchful, and humble about what we do not yet fully know.

Daniel 7-9: The Son of Man, the Ancient of Days, and the Seventy Weeks

Daniel 7 is the theological heart of the entire book. In a night vision, Daniel sees four terrifying beasts rising from the sea — representing successive world empires — and then the scene shifts to the throne room of heaven. The Ancient of Days takes His seat. Books are opened. And then: “Behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away” (Dan. 7:13-14). Jesus explicitly claimed this identity before the Sanhedrin — telling them they would see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven (Matt. 26:64). The vision is not abstract theology. It is a portrait of Jesus receiving the kingdom that every human empire has been a shadow of.

Daniel 9 contains Daniel’s great prayer of confession on behalf of his people — one of the most theologically rich prayers in the entire Old Testament — followed by the angel Gabriel’s response: the seventy weeks prophecy. Seventy weeks are decreed to finish transgression, put an end to sin, atone for iniquity, bring in everlasting righteousness, and anoint a most holy place (Dan. 9:24). An anointed one will be cut off. These words point unmistakably toward the cross — the atonement for iniquity, the end of sin’s dominion, everlasting righteousness brought in through Christ’s redemptive work (Mitchell L. Chase, ESV Expository Commentary).

Four Ways Scholars Read Daniel’s Prophecies

Daniel’s visions — especially the seventy weeks — have produced four major interpretive frameworks that serious Bible students should know. We present them here not to confuse but to equip, with citations so you can research further.

Preterism locates the fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecies in the second century B.C., identifying them with events surrounding Antiochus IV Epiphanes and the Maccabean period. Most modern academic scholars prefer this view because it avoids claiming miraculous predictive prophecy (Jacques Doukhan, Daniel: The Vision of the End). However, this approach runs into difficulty when Jesus Himself quotes Daniel’s Son of Man language as referring to His own future coming — not a past event.

Futurism — embraced by many conservative Protestants through dispensationalism — places Daniel’s seventieth week and most apocalyptic fulfillment at the end of the age, teaching a gap of approximately 2,000 years between the sixty-ninth and seventieth week. This view takes Daniel’s language as genuinely predictive but projects most fulfillment into a future tribulation period (Doukhan). Critics note that this approach empties the Christian era of prophetic significance.

Historicism — the oldest interpretive tradition in both Jewish and Christian history — reads Daniel’s prophecies as unfolding across centuries from Daniel’s own time through the end of history, with some already fulfilled, some present, and some still coming. Daniel 2’s four-kingdom sequence from Babylon through Rome is its strongest argument: no power has yet made the iron stick to the clay, and no conqueror has reunified the divided world — exactly as the statue predicts (George Knight, The Apocalyptic Vision). A committee of scholars concluded that historicism alone aligns fully with the biblical data, though few contemporary non-Adventist scholars hold this view today.

Idealism rejects historical fulfillments entirely, reading all prophetic imagery as timeless symbolic representations of the cosmic struggle between good and evil.

Each framework has thoughtful, faithful scholars behind it. What we can say with confidence is this: the Son of Man of Daniel 7 is Jesus. The atonement for iniquity in Daniel 9 is the cross. The everlasting kingdom that shatters all human empires is coming. And as Jesus Himself said — no one knows the day or the hour. We study, we watch, and we hold our interpretations with both conviction and humility.

• God’s Character — God is the Ancient of Days Who Sits in Eternal Judgment: God’s throne is established before all time — every earthly empire rises and falls before Him, and He has been sovereign over all of it from the very beginning (Dan. 7:9-10).
• God’s Desire — God Desires Confession and Intercession From His People: God responded to Daniel’s prayer of identification with his people’s sin with direct revelation and promise — God is moved by the humble, confessing heart (Dan. 9:3-19).
• God’s Promise — God Promises an Everlasting Kingdom Through the Son of Man: God’s plan has always been to give all dominion, glory, and authority to the One who comes on the clouds — and that kingdom will never be destroyed (Dan. 7:13-14).
• Glimpse of Jesus — God Fulfilled Daniel’s Vision in His Son: God fulfilled Daniel 7 in Jesus, who claimed the Son of Man title directly before the Sanhedrin — declaring that they would see Him coming on the clouds of heaven (Matt. 26:64; Rev. 1:7).

The Heartbeat:

God’s Son is the Son of Man who received the everlasting kingdom in Daniel’s vision — and He is coming back.

• Daniel prayed for his people with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes — identifying personally with their sin even though he was blameless. Who are you interceding for with that level of identification and urgency?
