Day 257 Bible Study Daniel 4-6

Day 257 Bible Study Daniel 4-6

Welcome to Day 257. Today’s reading covers three of the most well-known stories in the entire Bible — a king who lost his mind and lived like an animal, a mysterious hand writing on a palace wall, and a man spending the night in a den of lions. Each one is about the same thing: who is actually in charge of this world.

Heart Dive has partnered with the Manna app to make HD365 even easier to follow. Join the Heart Dive Circle through the player above, and you’ll immediately be prompted to join the complete HD365 reading plan. Once you join, you’ll have access to each day’s reading, audio, and Hub content all in one place. For the best HD365 experience, we recommend following the plan through Manna.

Daniel 4-6: The Humbled King, the Writing on the Wall, and the Lions Den

Nebuchadnezzar’s humbling in Daniel 4 is one of the most remarkable conversion accounts in all of Scripture — and it comes directly from the king’s own pen. He had a dream of a massive tree cut down to a stump, and Daniel delivered the interpretation with genuine grief: this is you. Your pride will cost you everything. For seven years, Nebuchadnezzar lived in the fields like an animal, eating grass, his hair growing like eagles’ feathers, his nails like birds’ claws. And then — the moment he lifted his eyes toward heaven — his reason returned. The chapter ends with Nebuchadnezzar praising the God of heaven whose dominion is an everlasting dominion. The self-destructive pride of humanity is one of Daniel’s three dominant themes (Bill Arnold and Bryan Beyer, Encountering the Old Testament), and chapter 4 is its clearest case study.

Belshazzar in chapter 5 had the same testimony available to him through his grandfather and chose to ignore it entirely — even bringing the sacred temple vessels out to use as party cups. The hand appears. The writing reads: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin — numbered, weighed, divided. That same night, Belshazzar is killed. Chapter 6 moves to Darius the Mede, and Daniel’s enemies engineer a law designed specifically to trap him. Daniel’s response to the decree is no response at all — he simply goes home, opens his window toward Jerusalem, and prays exactly as he always has. Three times a day. The lions don’t touch him. God’s sovereignty over every empire — Babylonian, Median, Persian — is the unshakeable thread running through every chapter.

  • God’s Character — God is the Most High Who Rules Over Every Human Kingdom: He removes kings and sets up kings — no throne is established and no empire falls apart from His sovereign hand (Dan. 4:17, 25, 32).
  • God’s Desire — God Desires That the Proud Acknowledge His Supremacy: God’s invitation through Nebuchadnezzar’s ordeal is clear — lift your eyes toward heaven, acknowledge who is actually in charge, and your reason will return (Dan. 4:34).
  • God’s Promise — God Promises Deliverance to Those Who Trust Him: God shut the mouths of the lions — His protection over Daniel was more real than any threat against him (Dan. 6:22).
  • Glimpse of Jesus — God’s Redemptive Plan Foreshadowed in Daniel’s Deliverance: God allowed Daniel to be falsely accused, condemned by an unchangeable law, sealed in a stone pit, and raised to vindication the next morning — a striking foreshadowing of His Son’s death, sealed tomb, and resurrection (Dan. 6:17; Matt. 27:66; 28:6).

The Heartbeat:

God is the Most High who rules over every human kingdom — and the one who lifts their eyes toward heaven always gets their reason back.

Heart Check:

  • Where has pride in your own accomplishments, abilities, or position caused you to forget that everything you have comes from God? What would it take for you to lift your eyes toward heaven in that area?
  • Daniel prayed exactly as he always had — no drama, no panic, no change of routine — even when it cost him his life. What does your prayer life look like when circumstances turn against you?

Heart Dive 365 uses the same Bible reading plan across multiple years, but each year offers a different teaching style and pace. Choose the phase that fits where you are right now.

✨ One Hub. Everything You Need. Every Daily Blog Post includes all three phases on this single page—videos, audio, PDFs, study notes—so you never have to leave to find what you're looking for. (This comprehensive resource is free thanks to our Heartkeepers community.)

Where are the notes?

Understanding Our Terminology

What are "Notes"? We use this word for three different types of study materials:

  • Bible Journaling Pages: PDF copies of Kanoe and Holly's Bible pages with their personal journaling alongside Scripture. Kanoe's notes are available for the entire Bonus Content year and most of Phase One. On days Kanoe took a full Sabbath, Holly's notes cover those passages instead.
  • Heart Check PDFs: Chapter summaries, conversational commentary, reflection questions, Deep Dive questions, and guided closing prayers.
  • Heartbeat of God PDFs: Deep theological breakdowns exploring God's character, attributes, and desires through Scripture.
  • Heart Work PDFs: Practical discipleship challenges and application exercises for personal growth or small group discussion.

One More Thing: All of this was created at significant cost, but is now available completely free thanks to our Heartkeeper community.

Congratulations on making it this far with us!

We hope you've enjoyed the Bonus Year with Kanoe and Phase One of Heart Dive 365.

If you're looking for Phase 2, aka The Heartbeat of God, or Phase 3 Heart Work PDFs, we're currently doing a third walk through the Bible at a more sustainable pace. We're currently taking a sabbatical, so we can honor both the season of life we're in and the depth these passages deserve.

Phase 2 and Phase 3 will make their way to the Hub as we complete them. This could take a few weeks or a few years, and we're okay with that. Good things take time.
