Welcome to Day 268. The second wave of returnees arrives in Jerusalem, led by Ezra — a priest, a scribe, and a man whose life was devoted entirely to the study, practice, and teaching of God’s law. What he finds when he gets there breaks him. And his prayer of devastated confession is one of the most spiritually honest moments in the entire Old Testament.

Ezra 7-10: The Scribe Who Knew the Law, the Prayer That Broke Him, and the Hard Work of Restoration
Ezra is introduced with one of the most striking personal descriptions in Scripture: he had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel (Ezra 7:10). Study. Do. Teach. That sequence matters — Ezra was not a man who taught what he had not first lived. The Persian king Artaxerxes gives him an extraordinary commission, loading him with royal resources and complete authority to establish the law of God in Jerusalem. God’s hand was on Ezra (Ezra 7:6, 9, 28) — the phrase appears three times in the opening section alone. When God’s hand is on someone, provision moves through unexpected channels.
But when Ezra arrives and learns that the people — including priests and Levites — have intermarried with the surrounding nations and their pagan practices, he tears his garment and cloak, pulls hair from his head and beard, and sits down appalled until the evening sacrifice. His prayer in Ezra 9 is one of the most theologically rich confessions in the canon — not primarily his own sin, but a deep identification with the collective failure of his people before a holy God. The community’s response is equally remarkable: they weep bitterly, and together they commit to the painful, costly process of separation from what was compromising their covenant identity. As the NIV Bible Speaks Today notes, prayer is central to worship throughout Ezra-Nehemiah — embodied most powerfully in Ezra’s chapter 9 confession.
- God’s Character — God is the One Whose Hand Moves Provision Through Unexpected Channels: God’s hand on Ezra opened Persian royal treasuries, granted extraordinary authority, and arranged safe passage — God’s favor operates through every system when He chooses to move (Ezra 7:6, 9, 28).
- God’s Desire — God Desires a People Who Study, Do, and Then Teach His Word: Ezra’s sequence — study, do, teach — is God’s pattern for those He entrusts with spiritual leadership. God desires formation before proclamation (Ezra 7:10).
- God’s Promise — God Promises to Restore Those Who Return to Him in Genuine Repentance: God never abandons His purpose — though the community had failed, the path back was open, and God’s faithfulness was the only ground Ezra could stand on in his prayer (Ezra 9:8-9).
- Glimpse of Jesus — God’s Complete Restoration Is Fulfilled in Christ: Where Ezra led God’s people from captivity back to spiritual integrity, Jesus proclaimed freedom to the captives — bringing the ultimate liberation from the covenant-breaking that Ezra mourned (Luke 4:18; B&H Holman Bible Handbook).
The Heartbeat:
God’s hand was on Ezra — and the man God’s hand rests on studies the Word, does the Word, and then teaches the Word in that order, not any other.

- Ezra’s sequence was study, do, teach — not study and teach. Where in your spiritual life are you teaching or speaking what you have not yet submitted to personally? What would it look like to close that gap?
- Ezra sat appalled for hours before he prayed — he let the weight of what he was hearing land on him fully before he opened his mouth. When you encounter the collective sin or failure of your community, do you rush to solutions or do you sit with the weight of it before God first?

Understanding Our Terminology
What are "Notes"? We use this word for three different types of study materials:
- Bible Journaling Pages: PDF copies of Kanoe and Holly's Bible pages with their personal journaling alongside Scripture. Kanoe's notes are available for the entire Bonus Content year and most of Phase One. On days Kanoe took a full Sabbath, Holly's notes cover those passages instead.
- Heart Check PDFs: Chapter summaries, conversational commentary, reflection questions, Deep Dive questions, and guided closing prayers.
- Heartbeat of God PDFs: Deep theological breakdowns exploring God's character, attributes, and desires through Scripture.
- Heart Work PDFs: Practical discipleship challenges and application exercises for personal growth or small group discussion.
One More Thing: All of this was created at significant cost, but is now available completely free thanks to our Heartkeeper community.

Designed for personal reflection with an emphasis on how to seek the Heart of God so you can know Him and love Him because the GOD of the Old Testament is the same GOD of the New Testament.

Production Style: Slower-paced. Theological.

Production Style: Practical. Action-oriented. Designed for both personal transformation and small group discipleship. "Let the Word move from your mind to your heart, and from your heart to your hands."
