Welcome to Day 262. Haggai is one of the shortest books in the Old Testament — two chapters — but the confrontation it delivers is pointed and personal. The people are home from exile, but God’s house is still in ruins while their own houses are finished and comfortable. Haggai asks the question that still lands today: is it really the right time to build for yourself while my house lies in ruins?

Haggai 1-2: Wrong Priorities, the Right Call, and the Promise of God's Presence
The returned exiles had a good reason for the delay, or so they thought: the time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house (Hag. 1:2). Haggai, in righteous indignation, challenges that logic directly. You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You earn wages only to put them in a bag with holes in it (Hag. 1:6). The economic frustration they attributed to circumstances was actually the direct consequence of misplaced priorities — God had withheld the dew and fertility because His dwelling place was neglected (James D. Nogalski, The Book of the Twelve). Consider your ways, Haggai says twice. That phrase — consider your ways — is an invitation to stop, audit your life, and ask whether what you are building actually reflects what you say you believe.
The response is remarkable. Zerubbabel the governor, Joshua the high priest, and all the remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord — and three weeks later, construction resumes. Chapter 2 then brings one of the most encouraging promises in the postexilic books: “I am with you,” declares the Lord (Hag. 2:4). The new temple will not look like Solomon’s in glory — and God acknowledges that directly — but His presence will fill it. The final oracle declares Zerubbabel as God’s signet ring, His chosen servant: a direct connection to the Davidic line and the coming Messiah. As Rhome Dyck notes, present obedience is intricately linked with the inauguration of the new age in which the Lord will rule the world through His Davidic vice-regent.
- God’s Character — God is Jealous for His Dwelling Place Among His People: God withheld provision not out of cruelty but to redirect His people’s priorities — He refuses to be perpetually sidelined while His people build for themselves (Hag. 1:9-11).
- God’s Desire — God Desires to Be First, Not an Afterthought: God’s call through Haggai is a call to consider your ways — to honestly audit what your time, resources, and energy are building (Hag. 1:5-7).
- God’s Promise — God Promises His Presence With Those Who Obey: “I am with you” is God’s answer to a discouraged and comparing people — His presence is the glory the new temple needed, not Solomon’s gold (Hag. 2:4-5).
- Glimpse of Jesus — God’s Temple Promise Is Fulfilled in Christ and His Church: Jesus declared that something greater than the temple is here (Matt. 12:6), and His body became the true temple — believers now are God’s dwelling place, filled with His Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16; Eph. 2:19-22).

God is not asking for a perfect building — He is asking for a people who will consider their ways and put His presence first.

What are "Notes"? We use this word for three different types of study materials:
- Bible Journaling Pages: PDF copies of Kanoe and Holly's Bible pages with their personal journaling alongside Scripture. Kanoe's notes are available for the entire Bonus Content year and most of Phase One. On days Kanoe took a full Sabbath, Holly's notes cover those passages instead.
- Heart Check PDFs: Chapter summaries, conversational commentary, reflection questions, Deep Dive questions, and guided closing prayers.
- Heartbeat of God PDFs: Deep theological breakdowns exploring God's character, attributes, and desires through Scripture.
- Heart Work PDFs: Practical discipleship challenges and application exercises for personal growth or small group discussion.
