Day 316 Bible Study Matthew 27; Mark 15

Day 316 Bible Study Matthew 27; Mark 15

Welcome to Day 316! This is the day. Jesus stands silent before Pilate, a guilty man goes free in His place, and darkness covers the whole land in the middle of the afternoon. Matthew and Mark walk us through the crucifixion in brutal, beautiful detail.

Heart Dive has partnered with the Manna app to make HD365 even easier to follow. Matthew 27; Mark 15: Darkness at Noon

Pilate finds no real case against Jesus but caves to the crowd anyway, releasing a convicted insurrectionist named Barabbas in His place and handing Jesus over to be flogged and crucified. Soldiers mock Him with a crown of thorns and a purple robe, spitting on the very face that spoke the world into being. They nail Him to a cross between two criminals, and the crowd walking by hurls insults, daring Him to save Himself if He’s really the Son of God. At noon, darkness falls over the whole land for three hours, and right before He dies, Jesus cries out in words that should stop every reader cold: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He’s quoting Psalm 22, carrying the full weight of separation from the Father so we’d never have to.

The moment Jesus breathes His last, the temple curtain, the thick barrier that kept ordinary people out of God’s presence, tears in two from top to bottom. Not bottom to top, like a human could have torn it. Top to bottom, like God Himself reached down and opened the way in. A Roman centurion standing guard, a man with no reason to believe anything good about this execution, looks at how Jesus died and says, “Truly this man was the Son of God.” Even the darkest day in history has a witness to the truth standing right there at the foot of the cross.

  • God’s Character: He Bears Real Abandonment So We Won’t. Jesus’s cry of forsakenness wasn’t performance, it was the actual weight of sin separating Him from the Father (Matt 27:46).
  • God’s Desire: Access for Everyone, Not Just the Religious Elite. The temple curtain tearing shows God tearing down the barrier between Himself and ordinary people (Matt 27:51).
  • God’s Promise: Even an Execution Can’t Stop What God Is Doing. The darkest moment in history becomes the doorway to the greatest promise ever kept (Mark 15:33-39).
  • Glimpse of Jesus: Recognized by an Unlikely Witness. A Roman centurion, not a religious leader, is the first person in the Gospel to call Jesus the Son of God after watching Him die (Mark 15:39).

The Heartbeat:

God tore the curtain from top to bottom the moment His Son breathed His last, opening a way to Himself that nothing, not even death, could close again.

Heart Check:

  • Jesus experienced real abandonment on the cross so that you would never have to face God’s abandonment yourself. Do you live like that access to God is actually open, or do you still approach Him like the curtain’s still hanging there?
  • A Roman centurion with no religious training recognized who Jesus was just by watching how He died. What does the way you handle your hardest moments say to the people watching you?

Heart Dive 365 uses the same Bible reading plan across multiple years, but each year offers a different teaching style and pace. Choose the phase that fits where you are right now.

✨ One Hub. Everything You Need. Every Daily Blog Post includes all three phases on this single page—videos, audio, PDFs, study notes—so you never have to leave to find what you're looking for. (This comprehensive resource is free thanks to our Heartkeepers community.)

Where are the notes?

Understanding Our Terminology

What are "Notes"? We use this word for three different types of study materials:

  • Bible Journaling Pages: PDF copies of Kanoe and Holly's Bible pages with their personal journaling alongside Scripture. Kanoe's notes are available for the entire Bonus Content year and most of Phase One. On days Kanoe took a full Sabbath, Holly's notes cover those passages instead.
  • Heart Check PDFs: Chapter summaries, conversational commentary, reflection questions, Deep Dive questions, and guided closing prayers.
  • Heartbeat of God PDFs: Deep theological breakdowns exploring God's character, attributes, and desires through Scripture.
  • Heart Work PDFs: Practical discipleship challenges and application exercises for personal growth or small group discussion.

One More Thing: All of this was created at significant cost, but is now available completely free thanks to our Heartkeeper community.

Congratulations on making it this far with us!

We hope you've enjoyed the Bonus Year with Kanoe and Phase One of Heart Dive 365.

If you're looking for Phase 2, aka The Heartbeat of God, or Phase 3 Heart Work PDFs, we're currently doing a third walk through the Bible at a more sustainable pace. We're currently taking a sabbatical, so we can honor both the season of life we're in and the depth these passages deserve.

Phase 2 and Phase 3 will make their way to the Hub as we complete them. This could take a few weeks or a few years, and we're okay with that. Good things take time.
