Welcome to Day 273. Malachi is the last word God speaks in the Old Testament before 400 years of silence. And He opens not with judgment but with love: “I have loved you,” says the Lord. The people’s response? “How have you loved us?” The final book of the Hebrew Bible is a conversation between a patient God and a people who have grown so spiritually numb they can no longer recognize His love when it speaks directly to them.

Malachi 1-4: I Have Loved You, the Defiled Altar, and the Last Promise Before the Silence
Malachi was written to a community that had come home from exile, rebuilt the temple, and then slowly drifted back into the same spiritual apathy that had sent them into captivity in the first place. They faced economic hardship and lacked sound theological teaching — and without theological foundation, economic pressure led to a distorted view of God’s character and a compromised worship (G.V. Smith, International Standard Bible Encyclopedia). The priests were offering blind, lame, and sick animals on the altar — animals they would never dare present to a human governor — while treating the table of the Lord with contempt. God’s diagnosis is precise: they had grown tired of Him without realizing it.
But Malachi addresses none of these failures before first insisting on God’s ancient love (Eric Ortlund, ESV Expository Commentary). “I have loved you” is the opening declaration, not the closing consolation. God’s love precedes every rebuke in this book. The people’s challenge — “How have you loved us?” — is not an honest question but a symptom of the spiritual numbness that settles in when people go through religious motions long enough to forget they are meeting with a Person. The prophet then announces what will break the silence: “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me” (Mal. 3:1). John the Baptist came first, announcing the kingdom. Then Jesus came as the Messenger of the covenant — fulfilling not only Malachi’s promises but every promise of redemption from Genesis through this final page (R.C. Sproul, Reformation Study Bible). The last word of the Old Testament is a promise pointing to the first word of the New. The sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings (Mal. 4:2). And then — silence. Until the angel speaks to Mary.
- God’s Character — God is the Loving Father Who Speaks First Before He Corrects: God’s opening word in Malachi is not judgment but declaration — “I have loved you” comes before every rebuke, because God’s love is the foundation from which all His correction flows (Mal. 1:2; Eric Ortlund, ESV Expository Commentary).
- God’s Desire — God Desires Worship That Reflects Who He Actually Is: God desires offerings that cost something, hearts that fear His name, and a people who treat the table of the Lord as the privilege it is — not a religious routine to be performed with whatever is left over (Mal. 1:6-8).
- God’s Promise — God Promises the Sun of Righteousness Will Rise With Healing in Its Wings: God’s last promise before the silence is not condemnation but sunrise — for those who fear His name, healing and freedom are coming, and the darkness will not be the final word (Mal. 4:2).
- Glimpse of Jesus — God Fulfilled Malachi’s Messenger Promise in John the Baptist and His Son: John the Baptist came as the messenger who prepared the way, and Jesus came as the Messenger of the covenant — fulfilling not only Malachi but every promise of redemption from Genesis to this final page of the Old Testament (Mal. 3:1; Matt. 11:10; R.C. Sproul, Reformation Study Bible).
The Heartbeat:
God’s first word to a spiritually numb people is not judgment but love — “I have loved you” — because He always begins there, no matter how long we have been going through the motions.

- The people asked “How have you loved us?” not as a genuine question but as a symptom of spiritual numbness. Where in your own life have you grown so familiar with God’s goodness that you have stopped recognizing it as love? Name three specific ways He has loved you in the last 30 days.
- Malachi closes the Old Testament with a sunrise still coming — the sun of righteousness not yet risen, the messenger not yet sent, the silence about to begin. As you close out 273 days of this reading plan, what promise of God are you still waiting for — and can you hold it with the same confidence that every reader of Malachi held Malachi 4:2 for 400 years before John the Baptist was born?
