Day 264 Bible Study Zechariah 5-9
Day 264 Bible Study Zechariah 5-9
Welcome to Day 264. Today’s reading completes the night visions and then opens the second major section of Zechariah — oracles that look further into the future, culminating in one of the most precise Messianic prophecies in the entire Old Testament: a king is coming to Jerusalem, righteous and having salvation, humble and riding on a donkey.
Heart Dive has partnered with the Manna app to make HD365 even easier to follow. Zechariah 5-9: The Final Visions, the Crowned Priest-King, and the Coming King
The final night visions in chapters 5-6 address the purging of sin from the land — a flying scroll of judgment against thieves and perjurers, a woman in a basket representing wickedness carried away to Babylon, and four chariots going out to patrol the earth. Then the climactic symbolic action: Joshua the high priest is crowned with a crown of silver and gold, declared the Branch who will build the Temple of the Lord, and told that he will bear royal honor and rule on his throne as a priest — a priest-king (Zech. 6:12-13). This is a direct preview of what only Jesus would ultimately fulfill — the merging of the priestly and royal offices into one person.
Chapters 7-8 address a question about fasting and deliver some of the most socially urgent teaching in the postexilic prophets: “Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart” (Zech. 7:9-10). Then chapter 9 opens the second half of Zechariah with the oracle everyone recognizes: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey” (Zech. 9:9). Matthew and John both quote this verse at the triumphal entry. The warrior-shepherd king who defeats all enemies rides in not on a war horse but on a donkey — victorious, yet humble.
- God’s Character — God is the Warrior King Who Chooses Humility Over Force: God’s Messiah arrives not on a warhorse but on a donkey — God’s power is displayed not through domination but through the humility of a servant king (Zech. 9:9).
- God’s Desire — God Desires Justice and Mercy Woven Into Daily Life: God’s rebuke in Zechariah 7 is clear — true fasting means rendering just judgments and showing kindness to the widow, the fatherless, and the sojourner (Zech. 7:9-10).
- God’s Promise — God Promises a Priest-King Who Will Build His Temple: God promises a Branch who will bear royal honor and rule as both priest and king — an office no human could hold simultaneously until Jesus (Zech. 6:12-13).
- Glimpse of Jesus — God’s Priest-King Is Jesus Riding Into Jerusalem: Matthew 21:4-5 and John 12:15 both quote Zechariah 9:9 directly at the triumphal entry — Jesus is the righteous, saving, humble king Zechariah described 500 years before Palm Sunday.
The Heartbeat:
God’s king came riding on a donkey — not because He lacked power but because humility and sacrifice were always the plan for how He would win.
Heart Check:
- Zechariah 7 asks whether your religious practices — your fasting, your giving, your church attendance — are actually producing justice, mercy, and kindness toward the vulnerable around you. What is your honest answer?
- Jesus fulfilled Zechariah 9:9 exactly as written, 500 years later, on a specific day in a specific city on a specific animal. How does that precision strengthen your trust in the prophecies He has not yet fulfilled?

Heart Dive 365 uses the same Bible reading plan across multiple years, but each year offers a different teaching style and pace. Choose the phase that fits where you are right now.
✨ One Hub. Everything You Need. Every Daily Blog Post includes all three phases on this single page—videos, audio, PDFs, study notes—so you never have to leave to find what you're looking for. (This comprehensive resource is free thanks to our Heartkeepers community.)
Where are the notes?
Understanding Our Terminology
What are "Notes"? We use this word for three different types of study materials:
- Bible Journaling Pages: PDF copies of Kanoe and Holly's Bible pages with their personal journaling alongside Scripture. Kanoe's notes are available for the entire Bonus Content year and most of Phase One. On days Kanoe took a full Sabbath, Holly's notes cover those passages instead.
- Heart Check PDFs: Chapter summaries, conversational commentary, reflection questions, Deep Dive questions, and guided closing prayers.
- Heartbeat of God PDFs: Deep theological breakdowns exploring God's character, attributes, and desires through Scripture.
- Heart Work PDFs: Practical discipleship challenges and application exercises for personal growth or small group discussion.
One More Thing: All of this was created at significant cost, but is now available completely free thanks to our Heartkeeper community.

We hope you've enjoyed the Bonus Year with Kanoe and Phase One of Heart Dive 365.
If you're looking for Phase 2, aka The Heartbeat of God, or Phase 3 Heart Work PDFs, we're currently doing a third walk through the Bible at a more sustainable pace. We're currently taking a sabbatical, so we can honor both the season of life we're in and the depth these passages deserve.
Phase 2 and Phase 3 will make their way to the Hub as we complete them. This could take a few weeks or a few years, and we're okay with that. Good things take time.
