Day 123 Psalms 106-107
Welcome to Day 123. These two psalms work together to reveal how God operates through Israel’s history. One examining failure, the other celebrating deliverance.
Psalm 106 contrasts Israel’s guilt and the Lord’s grace throughout their history, as the exiled Israelites confess the habitual sins of their ancestors and petition the Lord to act graciously by returning them to their land. Rather than glossing over Israel’s past, the Bible doesn’t sugarcoat history but is filled with stories and examples of perverse sin, being honest about the nature of broken humanity. The psalm catalogs eight distinct failures: unbelief, discontent, jealousy, idolatry, grumbling, unfaithfulness, rebellion, and corruption. Yet Yahweh’s deliverance as a reality is distributed throughout the psalm, revealing that God’s grace is greater than our sin.
Psalm 107 shifts perspective entirely. In this psalm, the members of the community call one another to give thanks for God’s enduring “steadfast love,” which he has shown not only to the people as a whole but also to the particular members. The psalm concerns gratitude for Judah’s return from exile, presenting four illustrations that repeat a common message: man’s helplessness, his cry unto God, and the Lord’s deliverance, each concluding with a call to thanksgiving unto God for His love. The four scenarios depict God redeeming the helpless from their enemies, rescuing us from the shadow of death, healing our diseases, and protecting us from the storms that threaten to sink our lives—all because he is good.
The prayer of 106:47, “gather us from among the nations,” is presented as being answered in 107:3.4 Together, these psalms demonstrate that acknowledging past failure and present deliverance deepens gratitude and strengthens faith in God’s faithfulness.
The Heartbeat: God doesn't erase our history. He redeems it. Psalm 106 says, "We messed up." Psalm 107 says, "He showed up." Both are true. Both are necessary. Confession without celebration leads to shame. Celebration without confession leads to pride.
Heart-Check: Can you hold both truths at the same time? That you've failed and that God has been faithful? Which one are you more likely to forget?
