Day 069 Numbers 35-36
Welcome to Day 069. God establishes cities of refuge that are safe places for anyone who accidentally kills another person. If you've committed manslaughter (accidental killing), you can run to a city of refuge and be protected from the avenger of blood until you receive a fair trial.
But murder is different. If you've intentionally killed someone, there's no refuge for you. The avenger of blood can pursue you. Murder defiles the land, and only the death of the murderer can cleanse it.
The distinction matters. God's justice is precise. Accidents happen and they're tragic, but they're not the same as premeditated murder.
Then the daughters of Zelophehad (who received their father's inheritance) face a new issue. If they marry outside their tribe, their land will pass to another tribe, disrupting the whole system of inheritance.
So they're told they can marry anyone they want, but only within their own tribe. They choose to marry their cousins, keeping the inheritance secure for their family line.
It might seem restrictive, but God clearly cares about justice and about protecting people's rights to their inheritance.
The Heartbeat: God provides protection for the innocent and establishes justice that distinguishes between accident and intention. He also ensures that what belongs to a family stays secure. His systems protect people and their futures.
Heart-Check: Where do you see God's justice and protection in your own life? How do they give you security?
