Day 092 Judges 8-9
Welcome to Day 092. After his great victory, Gideon does something troubling. He asks the people for gold... You know, all the spoils from the battle. He uses it to make an idol.
Gideon was humble when he was afraid. But success changes him. He begins to rely on his own reputation rather than on God. He forgets who gave him the victory.
Then Gideon dies. His son Abimelech sees an opportunity. He wants to be king, which is something God never intended. Abimelech/Abimeleck is ruthless. He kills his own brothers to secure his power. He leads the city into civil war.
The contrast is stark. Gideon's humility in weakness became pride in strength. And his son's ambition for power destroys everything.
The Heartbeat: God's character doesn't change, but power can corrupt ours. The areas where we feel strongest are often where we're most vulnerable to pride. We need God's humility at every level! Not just in weakness, BUT especially when we gain affluence.
Heart-Check: Where has success made you proud? How can you stay humble even when you're winning?
