Day 072 Deuteronomy 5-7
Welcome to Day 072. Moses restates the Ten Commandments. He reminds the people of the day God spoke from the mountain in fire and thunder, and how terrified they were.
They were so afraid that they asked Moses to be their mediator. "Don't let God speak to us directly," they said. "We'll die."
Moses understood. God's holiness is overwhelming. But God was pleased by their reverent fear. He wanted them to be in awe of Him.
Then Moses gives them the greatest commandment: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."
Everything else—all the laws, all the commands—flows from this one truth. If you truly love God, you'll want to obey Him. You won't need rules to force you into compliance. Love will pull you toward Him.
Moses also warns them not to forget that all they have is a gift. Don't think you earned it. Don't turn to other gods. And teach your children. Pass this faith down.
The Heartbeat: God desires our love more than our obedience. Obedience flows from love. When we genuinely love God, following Him becomes natural and joyful, not burdensome.
Heart-Check: What does your obedience reveal about your love for God? Are you following Him out of love or out of obligation?
